Operation Green Light for Veterans: A Simple Gesture with a Powerful Message
For many Americans, Veterans Day is an opportunity to pause and reflect on the sacrifices made by the men and women who have served our nation. While parades, ceremonies, and memorial events remain important traditions, one initiative has grown into a nationwide movement that offers a highly visible and meaningful show of support for veterans: Operation Green Light for Veterans.
Led by the National Association of Counties (NACo) in partnership with the National Association of County Veterans Service Officers (NACVSO), Operation Green Light encourages counties, businesses, organizations, and residents to illuminate buildings, landmarks, and homes with green lights during Veterans Day observances. The campaign serves as a visible reminder that veterans are valued members of our communities and that resources are available to help them thrive.
Every year, Operation Green Light for Veterans, commonly known as “Greenlight a Vet,” takes place from November 4 through November 11, culminating on Veterans Day. During this period, communities across the nation illuminate homes, businesses, government buildings, and landmarks with green lights to demonstrate support for veterans and raise awareness of the challenges they may face after military service.
How Operation Green Light Began
Operation Green Light traces its roots to New York State, where the New York State Association of Counties (NYSAC) launched the initiative in 2021 in partnership with county veteran service organizations. The effort quickly gained attention as communities embraced the idea of lighting buildings green as a public expression of gratitude and support for veterans.
Recognizing the program’s impact, NACo and NACVSO expanded the initiative nationwide. What started as a state-level effort evolved into a national movement involving hundreds of counties, local governments, veteran organizations, businesses, and residents. The campaign continues to grow each year as more communities participate in honoring veterans and raising awareness about the services available to them.
The Mission of Operation Green Light
The mission of Operation Green Light is straightforward yet powerful: ensure veterans know they are seen, appreciated, and supported.
Many veterans face challenges during their transition from military to civilian life. These challenges can include employment concerns, housing issues, mental health struggles, disability claims, healthcare access, and social isolation. Operation Green Light seeks to bring attention to these realities while encouraging communities to actively support veteran-focused programs and resources.
The green light itself symbolizes hope, well-being, and forward movement. By shining green lights in homes, courthouses, county facilities, bridges, monuments, and businesses, participants send a visible message of appreciation to veterans and their families.

Serving the Veteran Community
Operation Green Light is more than a symbolic display. It helps educate communities about the important work being done by county veteran service offices and other veteran support organizations.
County Veterans Service Officers (CVSOs) across the country play a critical role in helping veterans access federal benefits, healthcare, disability compensation, survivor benefits, education assistance, and other resources. In many states, these professionals serve as a direct connection between veterans and the benefits they have earned through military service.
The campaign also encourages conversations about veteran wellness, community engagement, and the importance of supporting former service members year-round rather than solely on Veterans Day. By increasing visibility, communities can help ensure veterans know where to turn when they need assistance.

How the Program Works
Operation Green Light is intentionally simple, allowing anyone to participate regardless of their resources or location.
Step 1: Display a Green Light
Participants replace an existing light bulb with a green bulb or use green lighting to illuminate a building, monument, storefront, or public landmark. The display serves as an outward sign of support for veterans.
Step 2: Participate During the Official Campaign
Operation Green Light for Veterans, often referred to as “Greenlight a Vet,” runs annually from November 4 to November 11, surrounding Veterans Day. During this period, participating counties, organizations, businesses, and residents are encouraged to display green lights as a visible symbol of appreciation and support for those who have served.
Step 3: Share the Message
Participants are encouraged to spread awareness through social media, local media, community events, proclamations, and educational outreach. Many organizations share photos and stories using the hashtag #OperationGreenLight.
Step 4: Connect Veterans to Resources
Communities often use the campaign as an opportunity to highlight local veteran services, benefits counseling, support groups, employment assistance programs, and health resources available to veterans and their families.
How Individuals Can Participate
You do not need to be part of a county government to support Operation Green Light.
Here are several easy ways to get involved:
- Replace a porch light or indoor lamp with a green bulb.
- Share information about veteran resources on social media.
- Attend local Veterans Day events.
- Volunteer with veteran-focused nonprofits.
- Support veteran-owned businesses.
- Thank a veteran for their service.
- Donate to organizations that provide assistance to veterans and military families.
Even a small gesture can help create awareness and foster meaningful conversations about the challenges veterans face after military service.

Why Operation Green Light Matters
Many veterans return home carrying invisible burdens. Some struggle with physical injuries, mental health challenges, employment transitions, or navigating complex benefit systems. While appreciation is important, meaningful support requires ongoing community engagement.
Operation Green Light provides a simple yet powerful way to demonstrate that veterans are not forgotten. Whether it’s a courthouse illuminated in green, a business displaying a green spotlight, or a homeowner changing a single bulb, each light sends the same message:
You served. You sacrificed. You are appreciated. And your community stands with you.
As communities shine green lights from November 4 through November 11 each year, they do more than decorate buildings and homes. They send a powerful message that veterans are valued, respected, and supported. Through awareness, education, and community engagement, Operation Green Light helps ensure America’s veterans know they are never alone and that their service continues to be recognized long after they leave the uniform behind.
